Repco Tyre Repair Products is happy to promote the FTA Guide to Wheel Security. More...

Repco Tyre Repair Products is happy to promote the FTA Guide to Wheel Security. The guide focuses on wheel safety and seeks to identify and share best practice. Amongst other topics the guide outlines: Key research findings, responsibilities for wheel security, why do wheel fixings loosen? types of wheel fixings, driver checks, maintenance of wheels and fixings, wheel fitting procedure and wheel re-torque procedure.

Senior Traffic Commissioner Philip Brown explains in the foreword to the guide that ‘Wheel security on commercial vehicles remains a high profile issue for the road freight industry. Incidences of loss are thankfully few. However, operators, drivers and maintenance providers cannot be complacent. Wheel security is a key part of licence commitment to operating well maintained, roadworthy vehicles. When things go wrong, it has potentially serious implications for the safety of other road users as well as the driver, vehicle and load.’

The Commissioner goes on to say that ‘Industry has made important progress in reducing the risk of occurrence through the current design of wheel fixings and understanding the reasons for wheel loss. Whilst there are products on the market that can make wheel nut movement more noticeable, or prevent wheel nut movement, operators cannot ‘fit and forget’. A good maintenance regime which is underpinned by routine preventative measures as part of driver walk round checks is essential, as are well understood procedures for fitting wheels.’

As many as two hundred different raw materials combine into a unique mix of More...

As many as two hundred different raw materials combine into a unique mix of chemistry, physics and engineering to give tyre consumers the highest degree of comfort, performance, efficiency, reliability and safety modern technology and creativity can provide. The production process begins with the selection of several types of rubber along with special oils, carbon black, pigments, antioxidants, silica, and other additives that will combine to provide the exact characteristics wanted. Separate compounds are used for different parts of the tyre. Then the task of assembling the tyre begins, see diagram for the layers involved.

The last step is to cure the tyre. The “green” tyre is placed inside a mold and inflated to press it against the mould, forming the tread and the tyre identification information on the sidewall. Then it is heated at more than 300 degrees Fahrenheit for twelve to fifteen minutes, vulcanizing it to bond the components and to cure the rubber. (FACT: This twelve to fifteen minute curing process is for passenger and light truck tyres only, off-road and large tyres may take up at a day to cure because of their size!) Every tyre is then inspected and sample tested.

TREAD: Provides traction and cornering grip

BELTS: Stabilize and strengthen the tread

SIDEWALL: Protects the side of the tyre from road and curb damage

BODY PLY: Gives the tyre strength and flexibility

BEAD: Assures an air-tight fit with the wheel

INNERLINER: Keeps air inside the tyre
